Field Experience

STUDENT TEACHING

Picture
Location:  Salem High School
Cooperating Teacher:  Mrs. Ellen Bosch
Description:  Mrs. Bosch has been at the high school for nearly fifteen years and has established a wonderful vocal music department where she is respected for the great work she does. I was given the wonderful opportunity to work with her for a semester. During the semester the classes that were taught were Vocal Class 1 and 2, Piano Class, World Drumming, and a 9-12 grade Chorus. I was able to teach full lessons in each of these classes and to work one on one with many students. Through the experience I was able to better understand the responsibilities of a high school vocal music teacher as well as get to understand myself and my teaching habits better.

Location:  Barron Elementary School
Cooperating Teacher:  Mrs. Amy Moldoff
Description:  The music program that has been established my Mrs. Moldoff is one of the best in the state. She has such a deep understand of teaching music to children and making it interesting and easy to learn for them. Throughout my stay at Barron I was constantly being given useful feedback to help me become a better teacher. Through this feedback and by watching her I learned multitudes of helpful information to aid my learning process. While at Barron I was given the opportunity to help teach grades 1,3,4 and 5. I was able to see the steps taken to giving each child a complete elementary music education and was given the tools to make my lessons successful. Through this internship I learned so much about elementary music that could only have been learned by getting into the schools and being a hands-on learner.

ELEMENTARY MUSIC METHODS
Location: Plymouth Elementary School
Cooperating Teacher: Mrs. Linda-Lee Scott
Description: Mrs. Scott has been teaching music to children for a very long time and I got that great opportunity to learn from her and see how she runs a music classroom. I observed one of her 1st grade classrooms and also  one of her 2nd grade classrooms. I was also given the opportunity to teach a unit lesson plan of four lessons on rhythm to her 2nd grade class and to teach a song to her 1st grade class. Teaching elementary school children music was such a great experience, especially since it was my first time. Just by teaching the children I learned good ways to deal with children and to teach them something new to them. It was a great experience for me that I'm so glad I was given.

SECONDARY MUSIC METHODS

Picture
Location: Plymouth High School
Cooperating Teacher: Kelley Sullivan
Description: Ms. Sullivan is a brand new music teacher at PHS and I got the opportunity to see how she dealt with this from the very start all the way until their first concert together. She went in there with not a lot of good things left from the previous teacher and was able to turn the program around slowly, and I was able to watch this happen and learn a lot from it. I observed the Symphonic Band and the Jazz Band and got the opportunity to see how she ran both of those. During our time there we were also given the opportunity to teach many different sectionals to different groups of students helping them with their music. It was a great experience to see how Ms. Sullivan dealt with the situation and to get to teach the students.

CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES
Location: Plymouth High School
Cooperating Teacher: Lori Cleary
Description: I was able to sit in on Mrs. Cleary's time with her students when she went over their homework with them or helped them with anything they were having trouble with. She was there to keep them on track and I was able to help her with her students each time I was there. Following is a short reflection paper about this field experience.
